The education ministry in Israel has said that it will eliminate any mention of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg from its syllabus, following criticism from Israel in the wake of what it perceived to be an “anti-Israel” remark on X, the former Twitter.

After posting on X over the weekend with the message, “Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza,” the 20-year-old came under fire.

The world must raise its voice and demand an early end to hostilities, justice, and freedom for the Palestinian people and all impacted civilians.

The education ministry stated that Thunberg’s “stance disqualifies her from being an educational and moral role model, and she is no longer eligible to serve as an inspiration and educator for Israeli students,” according to an article published in The Jerusalem Post.

The education ministry’s stated, “Due to her position, it inevitably weakens the validity of her climate-related positions when Greta addresses a different topic superficially and dismissively.”

“People from other backgrounds may believe that her lack of commitment to the other cause undermines the intensity and sincerity of her climate action. This could be used by those with vested interests to depict climate campaigners as shallow and unintelligent. Greta is therefore no longer a role model for us in the context of climate change, even if she chooses not to address the moral and ethical ramifications she disregarded. There are many more role models for us to aspire to,” it continued.

In an open letter to Thunberg, a number of pro-Israel activists expressed their “deep hurt, shock, and disappointment with your tweets and posts regarding Gaza” and suggested that Thunberg “look again at the atrocities conducted by Hamas.”
