Overview
The past 30 years have seen the University of Exeter transformed from a middle-ranking institution into one of the country’s academic heavy hitters – with stiff competition for places across most subjects. It is split between two green and spacious campuses: the Streatham campus at headquarters in Exeter, and the Penryn campus, which it shares with Falmouth University, in Cornwall. The medical school is based at a second smaller campus (St Luke’s) in Exeter. The university is a popular choice, attracting around 40,000 applications in each of the past nine years, although in common with other Russell Group universities (which gorged themselves on students with higher than expected grades during the pandemic), the intake via Ucas dropped by around 2,000 students last year to around 6,000, closer to pre-pandemic levels. It is popular with students drawn from London, the South East and South West, as well as those educated in independent schools, who make up just under 30% of the intake. The university has embraced degree apprenticeships more than any other Russell Group university. A level 6 project manager integrated degree is launched this January, with a level 7 option in digital and technology solutions coming next September, helping to bring the total number of degree apprentices on campus to more than 3,100.

Paying the bills
About one in six UK-resident Exeter students are in receipt of a bursary or scholarship, while around £2.5m of scholarships are available to high-achieving international students in the coming year. All British students from homes with less than £30,000 annual household income qualify for an Access to Exeter bursary worth £800, rising to £1,270 for incomes between £16,000 and £25,000, and £2,100 for those where income is less than £16,000. The bursary is available in each year of study. The university has also ploughed considerable sums into additional hardship support in the past year, opening community larders on both the Exeter and Cornwall campuses, introducing low-cost food and drink options at all university catering outlets, and paying a winter bursary of £150 to all students from homes with household income of less than £30,000. IT bursaries have been extended to help with the costs of computer equipment. Accommodation price rises have been pegged to 7% for the coming academic year in Cornwall, and range from 6% to 12.5% in Exeter, where the prices stood at just more than £4,800 (for a 42-week contract) to £7,700 (40 weeks) for self-catered accommodation last year.

What’s new?
There are several digital initiatives marking a shift in the university into a new era of teaching and learning. Exeter has invested in new digital platforms for exams and assessment, alongside a virtual learning environment, to improve student and staff experience and access to analytics. Both platforms enable blended learning and assessment. A Digital Hub was planned before the Covid pandemic hit in 2020, and once it did the need for it became even more evident. It provides face-to-face and online digital skills support for students, helping 6,000 in person and 36,000 remotely since the launch three years ago. With the move to online and hybrid learning, the Hub was able to support and train students on the new digital tools being used in teaching. Exeter has also developed a network of “makerspaces” across campus, which focus on engineering, digital innovation and entrepreneurship. They encourage the refining of concepts and creation of prototypes using among other things 3D printing and advanced robotic and digital simulation equipment. Several new degrees launch this month including options in environmental humanities with or without employment experience at home or overseas, or with and without study abroad. There are also three new degrees in sustainable energy futures and a BEng in renewable energy engineering with foundation year.

Admissions, teaching and student support
Staff training in mental health awareness and suicide prevention is being overhauled in the wake of the suicide of physics with astrophysics student Harry Armstrong Evans in 2021, one of 11 student deaths at Exeter in six years. Following concerns raised by the coroner at the inquest, new staff training is being rolled out to all staff depending on their role to better equip them to support students who may present with mental health issues. Students are encouraged to disclose any known health issues or disabilities when they enrol so that tailored support can be put in place. Separately, the university has introduced mandatory equality, diversity and inclusion training for students, alongside consent awareness training. In response to student feedback, this is no longer just part of induction but incorporated in a fuller programme of activities, which takes place across the year. The university won a recent award for its work on widening access to higher education to under-represented groups. This includes the Exeter Scholars programme which works with 1,000 Year 10-13 students each year who meet widening participation criteria. About 430 achieve university places on average as a result, with 190 coming to Exeter. The university makes contextual offers (mostly of up to two grades lower than the standard offer) with around a quarter of the intake this month expected to benefit from one. All applicants from state schools that live in the 40% of postcodes sending the fewest students to university get a contextual offer. Applicants from Exeter progression programmes will get offers up to three grades below the standard. While delivery of courses will continue to be founded on high-quality in-person provision, the university tells us, Exeter is making significantly greater use of digital resources which will continue to be used to support and supplement learning.
