Overview
Bringing higher education to part of the country where traditionally it has been in short supply, the University of Suffolk (UoS) has established a significant presence in the past 15 years. It began life as University Campus Suffolk in 2007, the result of a partnership between the universities of Essex and East Anglia, becoming an independent university as recently as 2016. The attractive main campus on the Ipswich waterfront has seen considerable investment in facilities as it builds towards a projected 10,000 students by 2030. The new £13m health and wellbeing building on the Ipswich campus is the latest big-ticket item to open, containing two floors of simulation suites for the university’s large population of healthcare students. The university has a more unique student demographic, with more mature returners to education than any other university, most of them recruited locally from East Anglia. Record admissions last September saw 70% of the 3,385 places awarded to overseas students. The university’s long-term strategy commits to “research informed and employer engaged learning and teaching” which can be seen in many courses offered already. Degrees are career-focused – often in areas of employment shortages, regionally and nationally – with plenty of work placements and experience.

Paying the bills
Several bursaries are open to undergraduates at UoS, around 30% of whom received some form of financial support from the university in 2021-22. A one-off £1,000 Ipswich Award is paid to students on the Ipswich campus who come from homes in the 20% of postcodes with the highest levels of deprivation, or who attended East Coast College or Suffolk New College previously. Care leavers and students from ethnic minorities also qualify. Degree apprenticeships, foundation degrees, degrees that attract support from the NHS and online courses are among the courses not covered by the award. However, up to 70 students on the university’s two-year foundation degree in health and wellbeing qualify for a £3,000 per year bursary if they meet or exceed the course entry requirements. The university’s Technology Support Fund pays one-off £300 grants towards the costs of IT equipment to support blended learning. The university won a slice of the money on offer from the Office for Students to help train new data science and artificial intelligence specialists in the UK. The final tranche of fifty scholarships will be awarded next year to students taking the new MSc degree in data science and AI. Under-represented groups in computing – such as women, black ethnic minority and disabled students – will be prioritised for support, along with UoS alumni. More than 750 places are available in university-endorsed residential accommodation with the cheapest room – and there is only one of them – costing £5,040 for a 48-week contract. Top-end prices are just north of £10,000 for a 51-week tenancy with 49 rooms available at this price.

What’s new?
A £13m health and wellbeing building on the Ipswich campus has added two floors of clinical simulation facilities featuring two hospital wards, a midwifery birthing unit, a sports and exercise facility, a community flat for paramedic training in a home setting, a radiography imaging suite, and counselling and physiotherapy rooms. The development benefits students, practice partners and the wider community – a common thread that runs through much of Suffolk’s provision. It is currently working with the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Health Care Board to develop a dental social enterprise offering NHS dental treatment, to form a Centre for Dental Development, and to develop clinical simulation and treatment facilities for undergraduates in dental therapy and hygiene. The university’s legal advice centre opened last year, providing law students a chance to put what they learn into practice, while supporting the local community with advice on family and business law. Meanwhile, up the coast in Great Yarmouth, UoS has put £3.5m towards the conversion of the former Palmers department store into a new university centre, library and community hub. The East Coast College project will see UoS degree-level courses taught onsite, adding to the portfolio of courses UoS already accredits at the college and further extending its footprint in the region.

Admissions, teaching and student support
The university has progression agreements with schools and colleges across East Anglia under which applicants are made lower offers. Outreach work seeks to raise aspiration, particularly in areas where few children go on to university. Contextual offers, which are normally eight Ucas tariff points (or one A-level grade) below published entry requirements, are triggered by home postcodes where progression to university is low and/or social deprivation is high. Students from under-represented groups are supported through schemes such as Build Your Future, which provides ring-fenced careers opportunities, specialist activities and the option to meet employers. Courses are taught through a mixture of face-to-face and online delivery; captured lectures are made available on Suffolk’s virtual learning environment soon after they have been given. “None of the courses are considered hybrid,” the university told us, “but are designed to be delivered via a seamless, blended methodology, which requires students to attend face to face, with online elements supporting their wider learning experience.” The university’s approach to wellbeing is summed up by “mental health is everybody’s business” and it provides a full range of support, advice, interventions and adjustments. A wellbeing and resilience workshop has been developed for delivery within the curriculum during induction weeks and is also available for students to complete in their own time. Wellbeing events and initiatives are regularly organised and include sessions on mindfulness, wellbeing walks and arts and crafts.
