Overview
There are few universities that can better Sunderland’s track record for delivering higher education to communities traditionally excluded from it. This means knowing its region well, given that the North East has the lowest university participation rates in England, and the university has a strong outreach programme into primary and secondary schools to raise aspiration and attainment. Alongside a wide portfolio of vocational degrees, the university is a leading provider of degree apprenticeships, with more than 800 apprentices on programmes as diverse as journalism (for which the university is very well respected), district nurse and digital technology solutions professional. The addition of a new medical school, opened in 2019, was the icing on the cake of the university’s extensive health and social care provision and is aimed at addressing a regional shortage of doctors. There are some of the most generous bursaries in the UK available to applicants for medicine from the North East and Cumbria who come from low-income families or live in areas of low progression to higher education. There are two campuses in Sunderland, one of them on the banks of the Wear and close to the city’s endless miles of sandy beaches, with further outposts in London and Hong Kong. The costs of studying here are among the lowest in the UK, with cheap accommodation, an affordable social life and a bursary scheme that puts most of its provision into an online study resources shop so that course materials don’t break the bank.

Paying the bills
Almost half of the university’s students in Sunderland and London benefited from additional financial help provided by the university in response to the cost of living crisis. Sunderland targets its help on those students that are key to its academic objectives (medics at its new medical school) and the many enrolled from low-income backgrounds. Much of the support offered comes in the form of StudyPlus credits – cash on an online account to spend on books, stationery, study aids and course materials – rather than in ready cash. It helps ensure the bursary goes on what it’s meant for rather than being spent in the pub. So, a University of Sunderland bursary is worth £2,000 spread over three years to students from homes where annual income is less than £27,500, of which £1,600 is in StudyPlus credit and £400 comes in cash. For students from homes with incomes between £27,501 and £47,000, a £1,000 StudyPlus credit is offered. Medical students from homes with less than £25,000 annual income qualify for free accommodation in their first year and half-price rooms in year two, alongside a £1,500 cash bursary in each of their first four years, rising to £3,000 in their final year, making £9,000 of cash support in all. A mix of smaller accommodation discounts and cash awards totalling £5,500 is offered to medics from home with up to £42,875 annual income, while those drawn from the 40% of postcodes that send the fewest students to university (which is essentially most of the urban areas of north-east England) get £3,000 of support spread over five years and a 50% discount on accommodation in the first year. There are several other scholarships and bursaries offered, including the novel Just Add You scheme awarded to all students who must fly or get a ferry in order to attend university here. In a region with some of the cheapest living costs in the UK, it is no surprise that university residential accommodation is also among the cheapest, starting at just £3,240 for a 40-week contract. Even the most expensive rooms top out at around £5,500 per year.

What’s new?
A £250m campus investment plan was announced in January spread across the university’s Sunderland and London campuses. The bulk of that sum will be spent on the St Peter’s campus on the banks of the Wear – home to the faculties of technology; arts and creative industries; business, law and tourism; and education and society – to create a new library and student centre in the first instance. A second tranche of investment will develop education and research facilities in computer science and engineering, as part of Sunderland’s commitment to STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) activity. A new home for the school of medicine and school of psychology is under construction and will be ready for the September 2024 intake of students. The 2024-25 academic year is also slated to see the opening of the university’s new London location in the Canary Wharf financial district. Ten years on from the university’s launch in the capital, London-based students now account for almost one-third of the university’s admissions. The London campus offers courses in professionally focused courses in business, finance and tourism, as well as health-related programmes such as nursing and health and social care.

Admissions, teaching and student support
Nearly a third of Sunderland’s students are recruited from areas where progression to higher education is among the lowest in the country, predominantly drawn from north-east England where this university is a popular choice. It runs a contextual offer scheme for applicants to its new medical school, which was set up with a specific aim of diversifying the intake into medicine and generating more home-grown doctors for the North East. A one-grade reduction in the standard offer is made to all students recruited from the North East and Cumbria whose home postcode is among the 40% from where fewest go on to university, so long as they meet normal entry requirements and attain the required UCAT medical score. A new Centre for Graduate Prospects will support all students but particularly benefit those with widening participation backgrounds. As well as embedding employability skills into all courses, the centre will provide mentors, student development coaches, online improvement resources, and enhanced engagement with employers, industry, and the public sector. There is no “out of hours” for mental health support, which is staffed on campus around the clock throughout the year. The service operates out of the university’s halls of residence. Students are invited to take part in Flying Start, a chance to learn about the university, including its mental health and wellbeing support, ahead of enrolment to help with the transition to higher education. For the vast majority of degree courses, teaching has returned to on-campus delivery since the pandemic, supported by the virtual learning environment.
