Overview
Ulster, which earns a shortlisting for our University of the Year award, has a presence that spans Northern Ireland. Four campuses in Belfast, Coleraine, Londonderry and Jordanstown have seen huge investment in recent years with the final phase of the much-expanded Belfast campus in the city’s Cathedral Quarter opening to students a year ago. Undergraduate courses have transferred there from Jordanstown, which will remain as the university’s sports hub. A record number of students – 6,670 – began courses last September, with around one in eight recruited internationally. Domestically, more than 99% of students come from Northern Ireland. Ulster will celebrate 40 years as a university in 2024, but its history goes back to the 19th century. Many degree programmes have been developed in collaboration with business and industry or professional bodies. Those strong links are evidenced further by the number of degree apprentices on campus, which is expected to expand to 750 by next September following the introduction of three new programmes (to go with the existing 13) covering computer science, international hospitality management, and accounting and finance.

Paying the bills
Tuition fees at Ulster for Northern Irish and Irish students are lower than in England and Wales, priced at £4,710 for the new academic year. (Students from the rest of the UK pay £9,250 per year.) Ulster’s main Access Bursary is pegged to 10% of the standard fee (£471) and is paid to all students recruited from homes with an annual household income of less than £19,203. The bursary is paid for each year of study. Up to 100 Access Bursary recipients who live in university accommodation can have their £471 bursary converted to £1,000 worth of accommodation vouchers for one year only. This potentially brings the cheapest self-catered rooms on the Magee campus, in Londonderry, down to £2,515 for a 37-week contact, which would make it the cheapest university accommodation in the UK. The standard price of £3,515 is still among the least expensive. The top priced non-studio rooms come in at £6,820 for a 44-week contract in Belfast. Studios cost more. Other bursaries, scholarships and fee waivers include a £1,000 annual bursary for care leavers and a hardship fund of £2.6m for the last academic year. This sum was double that awarded to the university by the Northern Irish department for the economy the previous year in recognition of the impact of the cost of living crisis.

What’s new?
The final part of the new expanded Belfast campus opened last September. The last phase included new student services hubs, a library and students’ union building, as well as the final specialist and central teaching spaces. The development programme has been one of the largest higher education schemes in Europe, adding 75,000 square metres of space to Ulster’s previous presence here to house more than 15,500 students and staff. Further projects are planned for Belfast with a Centre for Digital Healthcare and a Screen and Media Innovation Lab in the offing. The Derry-Londonderry campus is the new home for the university’s school of health science following the completion of facilities which include a specialist podiatry teaching clinic where students can treat patients under supervision, a diagnostic imaging suite and a modern occupational therapy suite. The coastal campus at Coleraine now has its own research vessel, the Laconia, currently being used for research on how shipwrecks impact biodiversity, while Jordanstown, is about to get an extension to its High Performance Sport facility. The campus will focus on sport – both playing and studying – following the transfer of other departments and schools to the new Belfast campus. Plans for the £10m Sports Village development were submitted in May.

Admissions, teaching and student support
Ulster achieves significant levels of social diversity on campus but does not operate a contextual admissions scheme. Its Access Bursary scheme (see Paying the bills, above) and Technology Fund are designed to make study more affordable for under-represented groups, while Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are in place to provide mentoring for widening participation students once they are enrolled. Online learning is confined to Ulster’s portfolio of courses designed specifically for full online delivery. “All other courses are delivered in person, aligned to Ulster’s People, Place and Partnership strategy which includes a commitment to a campus-based university experience,” the university told us. “Hybrid delivery is not part of Ulster’s curriculum design and is only used in exceptional circumstances such as extreme weather events.” In addition to the mental health services provided by the student wellbeing team, students have pioneered their own mental health campaign, Mind Your Mood, designed to encourage students to talk about their mental health and thereby reduce the stigma around it. Mind Your Mood runs events and training sessions to promote positive mental health and wellbeing initiatives, build resilience and encourage students to seek help when needed.
