Overview
York is organised into 11 colleges, the most recent of them, David Kato College, opening last September on the Heslington East campus and adding another 700 beds to the university’s residential accommodation stock. Heslington East opened more than a decade ago and adjoins the founding Heslington campus which, like the university itself, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The low-rise campus is built around a lake and its resident population of ducks, the original 1960s concrete structures now interspersed with more modern buildings as the university evolves. A new Student Centre is in the planning stage. The colleges are not academic structures but rather social and residential ones around which much of student life revolves. York was the first Russell Group university to sign the Social Mobility Pledge and the university’s robust response to the cost of living crisis reflects the diversity of its intake compared with many of its Russell Group peers. A household energy grant of £150 was offered; colleges organised free food events and the students’ union laid on budget hot food all day for a total of £1.20, or 40p per meal; library fines were abolished, and free laptop loans introduced for four hours and longer term. A record number applied for a place last year, with a 20% increase in applications since 2019. Those admitted are spread remarkably evenly across the UK and strong recruitment globally creates a good mix on campus.

Paying the bills
One of the more socially inclusive members of the Russell Group provides targeted support for students from widening participation backgrounds through its bursary schemes. The main York Bursary pays out £2,000 in the first year and £1,100 in each subsequent year of study for students from homes with annual income of less than £25,000. This drops only marginally to £2,000 in year one and £1,000 in subsequent years for incomes of between £25,001 and £35,000. Eligibility for the York Bursary also opens the option to participate in On Track, an opt-in programme for the development of key employability skills. This includes access to professional development workshops, coaching and workplace visits – evidence of the holistic approach to widening participation taken by the university. All students taking a foundation year get a bursary; this is worth £5,600 for students from homes with an annual income of less than £25,000 and £3,000 for everyone else. York Opportunity Scholarships pay £1,100 per year award for three years to students who have overcome significant barriers in their personal or social life that have affected their schooling. Applicants must also tick one of several widening participation boxes and come from homes with an annual income of less than £70,004. About one in four applications for this award is successful. There’s an abundant supply of residential accommodation across the Heslington and Heslington East campuses, with the cheapest self-catered rooms costing less than £4,000 for a 40-week contract, which is significantly cheaper than in most Russell Group universities. Catered accommodation is priced from £5,720 for a 40-week let.

What’s new?
The university moves to a semester- rather than term-based teaching structure this month. Moving to a two semester annual cycle of one week of induction, 11 weeks of teaching, followed by four weeks of assessments will create a more even workload for students and staff. It also aligns York with overseas institutions, making overseas student exchanges and study abroad programmes easier to facilitate. York is also introducing a common 20-credit value to course modules to make study across different departments and academic disciplines much easier. The university is ramping up its student employability initiatives, which build towards the York Award, an employability certificate awarded by the university alongside degrees when students graduate. Students are introduced to York Strengths in their first year, which has input from major graduate employers, and helps students understand areas for personal development and what employers seek in recruits. A careers and placements podcast has been introduced to answer student questions, provide inspiration and pass on top tips and insider knowledge. The York Profiles and Mentors digital platform, which allows students to browse alumni profiles and connect with them, has also been revamped. The York Institute for Safe Autonomy opened last year providing a space for research and innovation, education, public engagement and commercial realisation. It includes a “living lab” for autonomous technologies, and specialist robotics design and testing equipment.

Admissions, teaching and student support
A commitment to social justice runs deep and the university’s application process looks at more than just examination results to identify candidates with the most potential to succeed at York and to create an inclusive and diverse student community. There are several widening participation programmes run by the university; taking part qualifies applicants for a contextual offer, as does a home postcode in an area of low progression to university or high deprivation. An offer up to three A-level grades below typical entry requirements can be made. York has used a blend of in-person and online activities to deliver courses from well before the pandemic, but the precise balance varies between disciplines. While York says it will ensure all students continue to have in-person teaching, it sees changes ahead: “We anticipate an increased interface between the physical and digital in the future.” As part of the university’s core mental health support services, York has recently invested in Talk Campus, making available to students an online global student community offering peer support in 26 languages, and round-the-clock telephone access to clinicians delivered in six languages. Student wellbeing officers are now embedded in academic departments and college welfare teams – often the first point of contact for students experiencing difficulties – have been restructured to allow them to focus more on student welfare. An annual wellbeing campaign includes events and workshops on the benefits of sleep, effective studying methods, and managing perfectionism and procrastination.
