IPL Auction 2024: Starc, Cummins break records; top 10 most expensive players
We take a look at the top 10 most expensive players from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction which took place in Dubai.

Australia’s World Cup winners ruled the roost at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction as Mitchell Starc made history by becoming the most expensive player in the history of the cash-rich league. After Australia defeated India at Ahmedabad to win the ODI World Cup 2023, the Aussies, especially the bowlers, were expected to do well at the auction and rake in the moolah and so it proved to be. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) broke the bank for the services of Mitchell Starc with an IPL-record bid of Rs 24.75 crore.
IPL 2024 AUCTION: As it happened
The pacer is now the most expensive player in the history of the world’s most popular T20 league. He broke the record of his teammate Pat Cummins who was the first one during the IPL 2024 Auction to break the record for the most expensive player. Cummins went to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 20.5 crore, breaking Sam Curan’s record (Rs 18.5 crore) from the 2023 Auction.

The Australian duo of Starc and Cummins took the top two spots in the list of most expensive players in the IPL 2024 Auction followed by another top performer from the World Cup. Daryl Mitchell earned a big payday as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) dished out Rs 14 crore for the services of the New Zealander batter.
Harshal Patel went to Punjab Kings (PBKS) for Rs 11.75 crore and came fourth on the list followed by West Indies’ Alzarri Joseph who was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 11.5 crore. Lesser-known Aussies fast bowler Spencer Johnson was sixth most expensive as Gujarat Titans spent Rs 10 crore on the player.
Five out of the top six buys were pacers.
The bottom half of the top 10 buys was dominated by uncapped Indian players. Uttar Pradesh six-hitting machine Sameer Rizvi was bought by CSK for a whopping Rs 8.4 crore. Shahrukh Khan went to GT for Rs 7.4 crore.
Also part of the top 10 buys were Rilee Rossouw who was sold to Punjab Kings towards the end after going unsold and Rovman Powell who joined Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 7.4 crore.
