ICC World Cup Factbox: How New Zealand have fared in quadrennial showpiece event over the years
New Zealand have been to the semi-finals or better of each World Cup since 2007 and came heartbreakingly close at Lord’s four years ago.

New Zealand came within touching distance of winning their first ODI World Cup in 2019. Most neutrals would argue they were robbed by a bizarre rule at Lord’s with England clinching the title instead. That memory will be freshened when they open their World Cup campaign against the same opposition in India on 5 October.

Boosted by the return of influential batter and captain Kane Williamson, although not immediately, New Zealand come into the tournament in India as dark horses. This could also be swansong for Tim Southee and Trent Boult and if it comes with a trophy, it will be a fitting one.

As we build towards 2023 ODI World Cup, we bring to you some of New Zealand’s numbers at the World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1975:

World Cup recap: New Zealand have been to the World Cup semi-finals six times and been runners-up for two straight editions. They’ve been past the last-four stage of a World Cup every time since 2007. They were beaten convincingly in the 2015 World Cup final but the 2019 was a different story with a stray Ben Stokes bat and number of boundaries deciding the outcome!
At the 1975 World Cup, New Zealand lost to eventual champions West Indies in the semis and at the same stage to England in the next edition. In the first World Cup at home, in 1992, New Zealand were beaten by eventual champions Pakistan in the semis. It was Pakistan once again who sent them packing in 1999.
In 2007 and 2011, New Zealand lost to Sri Lanka both times in the semi-finals. 2015 and 2019 World Cups saw Black Caps reach the final but come agonisingly close. At Lord’s, against England, they produced arguably the greatest World Cup final.
